At this year's Adult Entertainment Expo, I had the pleasure of talking with Robert Morgan, the founder and owner of Royal Empire Productions, a company that is an up-and-comer in the industry.
Robert began with a little history.
Royal Empire was formed in 2012 and currently has ninety videos in its inventory.
"Our latest release is 'Body Art, Volume One.'" Robert says, which features Calli Carter and Jenevieve Hexxx. "We're working on another DVD called 'Amateur Snatch.'"
Also on the horizon is "Father Morgan Two" and "Father Morgan and the Pope," Robert adds. He plays the priest. As for the nuns, well you can guess where that goes!
Royal Empire is based in Orlando/Tampa area and books mainstream talent so the air travel runs from West to East, rather than the typical Florida to California.
"We fly in girls from VIPConnect, Society 15, and LA Direct, the top agencies," Robert says.
I'm interested in the company's niche or what in Robert's mind makes it unique.
It's all about realistic scenarios, he explains.
"As a consumer of porn I would be like, 'that would never happen. The average person couldn't get behind that scenario.' What I do is set realistic scenarios that the average person can get into it."
Does he mean everyday encounters?
"Correct," Robert replies, and references a shoot they did last year starring Nikki Delano as an example...
"We met her favorite porn star and convinced her to come back to the room. She gave one of my talent a blow job."
The Royal Empire product is a cross between a feature and a vignette. Robert tells me his average DVD runs two plus hours with twenty or so minutes of plot and acting.
"We try to do a little bit more plot and a little less sex because we want to make it interesting to people."
In fact, Royal Empire markets to both men and women and Robert believes it is women who want the story line. He chuckles, "If you think about it, women control the pocketbook in their relationships, so if you can capture them, you can get the man as well."
I suggest it sounds like couples porn.
Robert agrees. "People want to experience a Royal Empire DVD with their significant other, boyfriend, girlfriend, or maybe they just want to do it by themselves. In each one of our DVDs there's something for everybody."
Robert's shooting experience includes customs and POV work, but the company eventually made a decision to move beyond that.
"Let's do reality-based porn, but have it be realistic so the everyday consumer can get behind it."
So what is "reality-based or realistic," I'm thinking.
For Robert it means pairing up average guys, "Guys who don't go to the gym," he says, with established female talent.
And, from what I can gather, he has modernized some of the old stag film formulas.
Finally, I inquire about piracy. Everyone these days believes that DVDs are a risk in that regard. What is Robert's take on the issue?
"I do trailers and release them onto Pornhub. It funnels traffic to my site because the tube sties are not going away, so you have to figure out how to adapt to them." But, Robert concedes, "I'm sure people are making money off my content now."
I suggest that if a producer has a niche people will be loyal and pay for their porn, so his strategy may be sound.
Robert is in favor of regulating tube sites and believes that underaged people could be kept off the sites unless they have a credit card to verify access. "I feel that would help a little," he says.
Perhaps so.
